Casual Fall Outfit Ideas With Jeans

Open my closet in autumn and you’ll find the same thing: jeans. Every color, every leg shape, stacked above everything else I own. I’m a jeans girl through and through, and the more I’ve edited my wardrobe down to pieces I can wear three ways, the more my fall outfits have come back to denim.

That’s the thing about jeans that I keep rediscovering as a buyer’s assistant in my earlier career — trends rotate, but a well-cut pair of jeans is a building block. You can pair them with heels or sneakers, with a cashmere rollneck or a hoodie, and they still work. This post is my personal library of casual fall outfits with jeans: formulas you can copy with the jeans you already own, plus a few silhouettes worth adding.

Why Jeans Are My Autumn Anchor

Jeans are a staple in my wardrobe all year, but they earn their keep hardest in fall. When the weather cools, I reach for darker washes first, then my classic blue pair, and I’m a fan of wearing white jeans with white knits — a monochrome look I never tire of.

They’re also the rare item that’s genuinely versatile. You can dress them up with heels and a silkier top, keep them fully casual with sneakers and a hoodie, or land that in-between, casually cool zone with the right accessories or a tailored layer. Everything below is built from that range.

The Outfits

1. Rollneck sweater + ankle boots

Chocolate brown and denim is my favorite pairing this year. A rollneck sweater in a deep brown, mid-rise jeans, ankle boots — done. I keep a rollneck in a few neutrals for exactly this reason; it’s the top that makes the outfit feel considered without any effort.

2. Jeans + an oversized plaid blazer

One of the most iconic fall outfits there is, and the easiest one to build from what’s already in your closet. The plaid is the preppy element for the season, and a straight-leg jean underneath keeps it sharp. Boots in a similar silhouette finish it — this combination is one of my most-worn looks every single fall.

3. The ecru jean

I’m loving more off-white denim this year and I style mine in a more monochrome way: a cream knit, ecru jeans, boots in the same family. With ecru or white jeans you also have the option of adding a classic denim jacket as a light layer — it works better on light denim than on dark wash, and it’s a cheap way to change the whole outfit.

4. Barn jacket + ball cap

Casual, off-duty style, personified. A barn jacket over a v-neck cashmere sweater, straight-leg jeans, a small shoulder bag, suede boots and a ball cap. Every piece is workhorse-level, and together they read as a real outfit rather than a uniform. The ball cap is what pushes it from ‘neat’ to ‘I planned this but it didn’t take me long’.

5. With a Barbour jacket

An iconic pairing that works all fall long. I wear the classic Barbour in a US 8, and I own this jacket style in my own wardrobe too — a good example of an outerwear piece that outlives the season it’s ‘meant’ for.

6. Jeans + a blazer + casual sneakers

I like the juxtaposition of a blazer with sneakers and jeans. A structured blazer over a simple top, straight-leg jeans, and a clean white sneaker. It’s the formula I reach for when an outfit needs to look put-together but also like I could still run errands after. The sneaker is the difference between ‘office’ and ‘lunch in the city’.

7. The dark wash straight jean

Straight jeans are everywhere this season, and I like them in a dark wash to change things up. A dark wash straight jean with a cropped jacket and ballet flats reads polished; the same jean with a black blazer and canvas sneakers reads effortless. One pair, two very different outfits — that’s the test I apply to anything before it goes in my capsule.

8. The gray jean

If you don’t have a true gray jean in your wardrobe, consider this your sign. I wear mine so much in fall and then all through winter. Pair it with a good t-shirt layered over a cashmere v-neck and you have a casual, elevated look that easily goes from day to night — depending on your shoe choice, of course.

9. The straight leg ankle crop

High rise, fitted, cropped at the ankle with a straight leg — this silhouette works for so many fall outfits that I own it in a true blue wash and a dark wash. A word on sizing: check the specs on each style, because some have stretch and some don’t. I wear a size 28 in some styles and a size 27 in others depending on the fabric. If you’re between sizes, I’d recommend sizing up.

10. Business casual with jeans

A current go-to for me: a silk blouse, a classic black blazer, and a high-rise straight-leg jean. It’s versatile, on trend, and not too far out of my comfort zone. I size up to a 29 in this particular jean because it runs quite small. The white button-down swap works here too — pairing your jeans with a crisp white shirt is a combination you can never go wrong with. I size up to an 8 in the button-down I reach for most.

11. The chic mom jean

Cropped, high-rise, flattering with a slingback or a pair of pumps — this is my mom jean, done right. I’ve worn my favorite pair for nearly ten years, which is the most honest review any piece of clothing can get. Soft, comfortable, and still sharp enough for an evening out.

12. The wide leg jean

This silhouette is back in a big way. I eased into it with a dark wash pair, and I now own it in three colors — the dark wash being my newest acquisition. Wide-leg jeans are more forgiving than they look: they skim the body, they make a simple top look intentional, and they pair with everything from loafers to sneakers to a leather jacket.

13. The barrel leg jean

Very much of the moment, and very much street-style born. A barrel leg jean can be dressed up or down, but the shoe you pick really matters — loafers or a ballet flat for polish, a sneaker for ease. I also like a similar exaggerated-leg jean in a slightly softer cut; same styling logic, different silhouette.

14. Ball cap + plaid blazer + ballet flats

The preppy-meets-tomboy combination I keep coming back to: a plaid blazer, a ball cap, jeans, and a more feminine shoe like a ballet flat. The cap and the blazer pull in two directions and the ballet flat resolves it. Or go full neutral: a cashmere sweater, long-line jeans, sneakers and a ball cap — quieter, but just as put-together.

15. Loafers + a plaid blazer

This is one of my most-worn outfits every fall. A plaid blazer, straight jeans, and a horsebit loafer — the kind of loafer that’s so classic it will outlast whatever trend it was ‘on’ when you bought it. Similar looks are easy to find at lower price points if you’re not in the market for a designer pair; the silhouette is what matters, not the label.

16. With an oversized wool blazer

A wool blazer that works as outerwear — part jacket, part blazer — is one of the best value items you can own for fall. I wear mine in a size 6. For a bit of Parisian flair, add a striped knit underneath, and consider a sheer sock with your loafers.

17. With a slingback

An easy way to elongate your leg and slim the silhouette: a slingback with your favorite jeans that hit at or just above the ankle. Pair it with a soft silk-cashmere sweater and a shoulder bag and the whole outfit reads more formal than it is. If you’re between sizes, size down half a size in the shoes.

18. With a kitten heel mule

A timeless shoe that always looks elegant. I love pairing it with jeans that have a slightly distressed hem and hit at the ankle — the mule does the formal work, the hem keeps it casual.

19. Dark wash jeans + sheer socks

A chic way to wear your favorite dark wash jeans and loafers: add a sheer sock. It’s the kind of detail that costs nothing and makes the outfit look like you thought about it. Pair it with a cropped jacket and you’ve got an outfit that works in October and again in January.

20. Oversized wrap coat

As fall temperatures take a dip, a stylish oversized coat on top of your favorite casual fall outfit is the move. I own my favorite oversized coat in both black and navy, and they’re hands down my most-worn fall and winter coats. I size down to a small in nearly every style I own from that brand — always check the fit notes.

21. With a turtleneck

With the return of jeans weather in fall comes the return of turtleneck weather. A neutral turtleneck, a gray pair of denim, done. I also really like pairing black and brown this time of year as an alternative — it’s such a chic and timeless color combination, and it uses pieces you probably already own.

22. With a striped knit

A striped knit with your favorite denim is one of those combinations I keep re-buying because I love it so much — I now own three of them. It’s the kind of piece that makes jeans look like an outfit on their own.

23. Trench coat + sneakers

An iconic combination, of course. A trench, clean sneakers, straight jeans — the most ‘effortless’ look in this whole post, and it works because every piece is doing one job well.

24. With a quilted jacket

Easy and effortless to throw together — a quilted jacket over a simple top and dark wash jeans. An athleisure-adjacent look that still reads sharp because the jacket has structure. I keep one in my capsule for exactly the ‘I’m running but I still want to look like I’m not’ moments.

25. With a leather jacket

I always love the leather-and-denim combo. If you’re looking for a good investment in real leather, it’s one of the few outerwear purchases where cost-per-wear genuinely works in your favor — a good leather jacket outlasts a dozen trend pieces.

The Style Formulas

Here are the five combinations I reach for most, written the way I’d note them in my own wardrobe file:

  • Formula 1: Rollneck sweater + straight jeans + ankle boots = instant fall polish
  • Formula 2: Plaid blazer + ball cap + ballet flats = preppy-meets-tomboy
  • Formula 3: Silk blouse + black blazer + high-rise straight jean = business casual that doesn’t feel corporate
  • Formula 4: Turtleneck + gray jean = the default cold-weather outfit
  • Formula 5: Striped knit + wide-leg jeans + loafers + sheer socks = quiet, considered, zero effort

Each of these works with the jeans you already own. If you only add one new pair this season, make it the gray straight-leg — it’s the pair I wear the most from September to February, and it’s the hardest one to find in a cut that actually fits.

Try this one swap this week: take one of your existing casual outfits and replace the shoes. Loafers for sneakers, or a slingback for flats. The outfit changes completely without buying anything new.

Wear it well — Elise
