Things in My Closet I Can’t Wait to Wear This Fall

Fall wardrobe pieces in earthy tones on a clothing rack

There’s a moment early in the season when the closet stops feeling full and starts feeling right. The summer linens go to the back, the knits come forward, and for the first time in months, getting dressed feels less like a decision and more like a reflex.

That’s the version of fall I’m writing this post for. Not the one where you need seventeen new pieces. Just the ones already in your closet that you can’t wait to reach for again.

I’ve been doing a fall closet post for years now. It keeps me honest: if I own it, I should actually be wearing it. This year I’ve refreshed the list with a few new additions and a reminder of the pieces that keep earning their shelf space, season after season.

The Knits That Carry the Season

A good fall wardrobe starts with a handful of knits you’d wear on repeat without noticing. Mine are simple: a crewneck, a half zip, a cardigan. Nothing flashy. Just soft, well-cut, in colors that go with everything.

This plush crewneck sweater is my go-to for the first few weeks when it’s still too warm for heavy layers but too cool for t-shirts. I wear a size M and it’s one of the pieces I reach for without thinking.

The Jenni Kayne cashmere half zip has been in rotation for a few winters now. It’s the kind of cozy that doesn’t come at the cost of looking put together. I own it in two colors — the classic shade and a pretty ivory — and I’d buy a third if I saw it in a color that wasn’t already in my closet.

There’s also a cashmere layering tee that does the work of a second layer without adding bulk. I wear a size L and it’s the piece that makes a blazer or coat feel less like armor. It’s one of those quiet investments that pays off in how many outfits it quietly supports.

For the days when I want to look like I tried without actually trying, the La Ligne Lean Lines sweater in four colors has become a default. I’m not usually a v-neck person, but this one changed my mind — the neckline makes it layer differently than the crewneck I already own. I sized up to a L and love the extra-long sleeves peeking out of a coat.

When I need something for travel or a day that’s all about comfort, the La Ligne cardigan in black is the answer. It’s the same clean lines as the sweater, just with a front opening that makes it easier to slip on and off.

And for the days I want to feel like I’m wearing something I actually chose on purpose, the La Ligne Ben Polo Sweater is the piece. I’m into the polo sweater look this season and this one nails it without feeling costume-y. I wear a size L, though it probably would have fit in a M. The collar gives it structure without the stiffness of a real polo.

The Blazers and Coats

I’ve learned that a good blazer is worth more than three trendy ones. The ones in my closet have been restocked multiple times over the years, which tells me they’re doing something right.

This Smythe blazer is the piece I’d recommend to anyone asking me what to buy for fall. The fit is clean, the color is gorgeous, and it’s been on sale more than once, which makes it the kind of buy you don’t have to think about. I wear a size S and it’s the blazer I reach for when I want to look sharp without overthinking it.

The pinstripe blazer in my closet has been restocked again this season, and I get it — it’s the kind of piece that works with jeans, with tailoring, with a dress. I pair it with a layering tee in size M and it does the work of a full outfit in one move.

For the days when I need more coverage, the Barbour jackets are the answer. I own a small collection and some of them have been with me for over ten years. They’re the kind of classic that doesn’t need a trend to justify their place in the closet.

The & Other Stories coat in black and navy are my most-worn outerwear pieces. I size down to a Small in nearly every style from them, and they hold up year after year without losing their shape. If you’re going to buy one coat that does everything, this is the one I’d point you to.

The Sézane Scott Trench is the other one. It’s beautifully made, it’s timeless, and I’ve worn it in size 6 for several seasons now. It’s the kind of coat that looks like it was made to be photographed, but works just as well in a city center in the rain.

The Jeans I Actually Reach For

I don’t buy a lot of jeans. I buy the ones that fit, the ones I can wear three ways, and the ones I don’t have to think about when I’m getting dressed in the morning.

The Veronica Beard jeans in size 28 are my default. They’re the kind of pair that looks like I put effort in but actually took me about ten seconds to pick.

The gray jeans I own have been my go-to for the past couple of seasons. I prefer dark gray to black right now, and these have a fit that’s a little sculpting without being tight. I wore them so much last fall and winter that they’re the pair I reach for when I want to look put together without trying.

The AYR The Chaser jeans are the newest addition to my rotation. I sized up to a 29 and I’m glad I did — they fit the way I like my denim to fit, which is a little roomy without being shapeless. I’ve paired them with a La Ligne sweater in size XL and it’s one of the easiest outfits I own.

The AYR Legend jeans were one of the most-worn pairs from last fall, and I just picked up the AYR Bud jeans too. I’m in the middle of a quiet denim experiment, and I’m not ready to stop.

The Shoes That Make It Work

Fall is the season where your shoes do the heavy lifting. The right pair can make a simple outfit look considered, and the wrong pair can make a good outfit look like you gave up at 9am.

The Staud Wally boots are my default for the early part of the season. I got them last winter and they’ve been in rotation so much that they’re basically part of my regular rotation now. They’re comfortable enough for a full day of walking, and they pair with skirts, dresses, and jeans without any thinking.

The Aeyde kitten heel boots are the piece I’d recommend to anyone who wants to look polished without sacrificing comfort. I finally invested in a pair after eyeing them for a while, and they’ve quickly become one of the most-worn shoes I own. The leather is gorgeous, and they hold up better than I expected.

The Inez boots are the ones I’ve had since 2019. They’ve survived over 20,000 steps a day in Paris and still look like they just came out of the box. I also own the leather version of the Inez Paz, and I can’t recommend them enough for comfortable walking.

For the days I want to feel like I’m actually going somewhere, the Loeffler Randall knee high boots are the answer. They’re the kind of shoe that makes a simple outfit feel like you have a plan.

The water-resistant boots I own in three colors are the ones I grab when the forecast looks uncertain. They’re lightweight, which makes them easy to travel with, and they look better than most of the practical shoes I’ve tried.

The Bags That Earn Their Keep

I own more bags than I should, but each one has a job. The Cuyana suede tote is my day-to-day bag — the one I carry to co-working, to errands, to anywhere I need space but don’t want to look like I’m hauling luggage.

The Bottega Andiamo bag is the one I reach for when I want to look like I’m dressed without actually trying. It’s the kind of bag that does the work of an accessory and a statement at the same time.

The Manu Atelier bag is the one I didn’t use enough last year, and I’m excited to break it back out this season. It’s the kind of piece that reminds me why I bought it in the first place.

The Little Things That Finish the Look

There are a few pieces that aren’t the main event but make the whole thing feel considered.

The Gucci mini bag is my go-to for evenings out. It doesn’t fit much — just my phone, card, and keys — but it’s the kind of piece that makes a simple outfit feel like you have a plan. It’s the one I reach for when I want to feel like I actually chose my outfit instead of just surviving it.

The Gucci loafer mules and the classic Horsebit loafer are the two pairs I rotate in every fall. They’re the kind of shoe that makes a simple outfit look like you put thought into it without actually trying.

The Converse are the sneaker I reach for when I want to feel like I’m actually going to the store instead of the office. They’re the anti-formal, and I need that in rotation.

One More Thing

The Nour Hammour leather jacket I bought in Paris this past March is the one I’ve been waiting for. I didn’t get to wear it last season, and it’s the kind of piece that’s even better in person. The French brand makes the most gorgeous leather jackets I’ve seen, and I’m not ready to share this one with anyone yet.

If I can take one thing from writing this list: fall isn’t about buying new. It’s about remembering what you already own. The pieces that earned their place in your closet last year are the ones that will earn it again this year. And the few new things I’ve added this season — they’re the kind of additions that make the rest of the closet feel more useful, not less.

Try this one swap this week: pull out the blazer you’ve been meaning to wear, the pair of boots that’s been sitting in the back of the closet, and the bag you haven’t used in a month. Put them on. See how they feel. If they still work, you don’t need anything else.

Wear it well — Elise
