Fall Try-Ons I Actually Want to Keep: 12 Pieces for Casual, Work, and Family Photos

Clothing rack with neutral-toned fall sweaters and jackets, organized closet

My office floor is officially a clothes zone. Boxes, hangers, a pile of sweaters I’ve been going back and forth on — I spent an entire day trying on fall pieces from Nordstrom Rack, Spanx, Kohl’s, Amazon, Ann Taylor, and a few other places, hunting for the gaps in my wardrobe without buying a whole new one.

That’s a lot of trying on so you can skip it. Everything here is something I’d actually buy again, with honest notes on fit, sizing, and what’s worth the money. Sizing for reference: I’m 5’6″, usually a size S/M in tops and size 6 in bottoms, size 8.5 to 9 in shoes.

The easy everyday set

This is the combination I reach for most: a track jacket, kick flare jeans, a simple tee, and sneakers. No thinking required.

Spanx track jacket — size S

If you’ve worn anything in Spanx AirEssentials, you already know how it feels — like you’re wrapped in air. This jacket is that same fabric, and it’s as good as everything else in the line. I love the three subtle lines running down the sleeves, and the zipper is black instead of shiny, which keeps it from looking costume-y. Yes, it’s pricey. It’s also the kind of piece you’ll wear a hundred times, so the cost per wear works out.

Available in 3 colors, sizes XS to 3X.

Spanx kick flare jeans — size M

I still love a good kick flare. This pair fits well through the seat, hips, and thighs for shape, then relaxes down the leg for a modern look. The fabric is sturdy and supportive but stretchy — you feel held in, which matters more as we age, without feeling squeezed. Available in regular, petite, and tall lengths, sizes XS to 3X. I size up in Spanx bottoms almost always, so I’m in M.

The work outfit that doesn’t feel like a work outfit

Here’s the one I’m most excited about: a button-up shirt you can wear to a meeting that feels like your favorite sweatshirt.

Spanx AirEssentials button-up shirt — size S

It’s the same fabric as the AirEssentials sweatpants, just cut into a shirt you can wear to work. Not as thick as the sweatshirt, but thicker than a typical button-up — polished, but genuinely comfortable. Pair it with jeans for a casual day, or with tailored trousers and flats for an important one. That’s the whole trick: one shirt, two registers.

Spanx jeans — size M

Thick, sturdy, and supportive, with enough stretch that they don’t fight you. They hold you in and look polished — a solid workhorse for a capsule closet. Regular, petite, and tall lengths, XS to 3X.

Comfy pieces that actually look put-together

The goal with home clothes is simple: soft enough to live in, structured enough to answer the door in.

Spanx AirEssentials pants — size M

I’ve had these in one color before and just got them in red — which is perfect, because red is trending and I’m a moth to a flame with it. They feel like air on. Two honest downsides: no pockets, and some colors pill while others don’t. My friend’s red pair hasn’t pilled at all, so your mileage may vary by color.

Sporty sweatpants — size M

If you want a modern alternative to leggings or joggers, these are worth a try. The label says sweatpants, but the fabric isn’t fuzzy at all — it’s soft, stretchy, and thick enough to look polished, which is more than I can say for most joggers. There’s even a small pocket inside the right one for your AirPods. Comes in lots of colors.

Graphic tee — size M

A short graphic tee that works with the red pants and everything else neutral I own. It’s the easiest way to add the pops of red I’ve been drawn to lately.

The affordable finds

Barrel leg pants — size S

Remember the barrel leg pants I tried last month in leopard print? A coworker sent me the updated version, and she was right. This pair is softer but keeps its shape — it drapes so well I could write a whole post about it. It’s the budget answer to that super-expensive viral pair from Ruti, and it’s remarkably close for about 7x less. I’d buy again in another color without thinking.

Amazon fitted sweater — size S

I’ve shared a fitted Amazon sweater before that works for work and polished casual, so I went looking for the long-sleeve version for colder months. This one’s relatively thin but warm, and it works with trousers, jeans, and everything in between. It comes in tons of colors, which I can’t resist.

Quince sweater — size S

Cool, slightly oversized, and 100% cotton. It runs slightly short for a modern fit — not cropped — and it’s the kind of basic with enough detail to feel styled. Several colors. I’m in S; size down if you want it more fitted.

Crewneck sweater — size S, $19.97

Can you have too many no-fuss sweaters? This is the answer. It’s cozy without being bulky or overly warm — right for fall where I live — and it hits at a length where I don’t need to tuck it, which is my requirement for anything unfussy. Lots of colors, and it’s $19.97. The only question left is how many more colors to get.

The dressy options

Faux suede jacket — size S, $39.97

If you want a burgundy jacket that’s comfortable and affordable, this is the one. It’s stretchy and soft, but it looks polished and wears easy. $39.97, 8 colors, and it’s exactly the kind of workhorse I want in a capsule — the sort of piece you can’t stop reaching for.

Kohl’s burgundy print dress — size 6

This is the family-photos dress. The pleats, v-neck, sheer sleeves, and tie waist make it easy to look good in, and it’s comfortable — no squeezing. There’s a snap closure at the bust, which I appreciate. The only downside: no pockets, which is always a questionable choice. We forgive it when the dress is this good.

Ann Taylor lace trim top — size S

I ordered a long-sleeve blouse and got this one by mistake — which turned out fine. It’s as versatile as a basic, but the trim and dolman sleeves add just enough interest to feel elevated, and the stretchy back keeps it easy to move in. Work, lunch out, a date — it goes to all of them. Available in straight and petite.

Worn here with the pinstripe LOFT pants I keep coming back to. The longer I have them, the more I love them: they make a statement but wear as easily as jeans. Size 6 on me, and they’ve been on sale — worth checking. I also paired this look with a simple chain necklace; there’s a code for 20% off, TAKE20, which is a brand code — I’m not affiliated, it’s just what I’ve been using.

Ann Taylor bobble trim blouse — size S

Another piece that works for family photos, a dressy dinner, or the rest of fall at work. The bobble trim keeps it seasonal without being loud. It’s the kind of detail that makes an outfit feel intentional.

Ann Taylor dress — size S

If you prefer a shorter dress, this one’s cute and in a color scheme that’s very much this season. It’s fully lined, the belt gives you shape, and the length is an excuse to wear the tall boots you picked up this season. Straight and petite available.

Nordstrom boots — size 9

These came out of the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, and they make outfits look richer and more sophisticated than they should. I spotted them at 40% off, which I’m not going to pretend was a coincidence in how I felt about them. Available in several colors — the sale pricing may have moved by the time you read this, so check before you fall in love.

Tuckernuck satin dress — size S

Heard great things about Tuckernuck for a while and finally tried one on. It feels silky smooth, the print is pretty, and it’s the kind of dress that looks expensive without shouting. It’s pricey, and it has to be worn with the belt — don’t judge it without it, it doesn’t do the work alone. I’m not sure exactly where I’d wear it, but I know it’ll be sitting in my closet ready when the occasion shows up. For reference, I paired it with a softer, wider-calf brown boot that’s a good casual companion.

Style Formula

Soft knit + wide-leg jeans + flats = effortless polished casual, no effort required.
AirEssentials button-up + tailored trousers + loafers = work outfit that feels like a sweatshirt.
Printed dress + suede jacket + tall boots = family photos, dinner party, done.

The one thing to do this week

Pick one gap in your wardrobe — a work top, a good jacket, a dress for the holidays — and try on two options before you buy. That’s all this post is: the trying-on part, done for you. If you can’t wear it three ways, put it back. If you can, it’s probably worth it.

Wear it well — Elise
