A Few Facts Worth Knowing

Some of the film history here is worth remembering even when nobody’s keeping score. These are extras connected to some of the movies you just completed, not answers recycled from the quiz.

The shower sequence in Psycho is remarkably compact. The famous scene runs less than a minute, but it was assembled from dozens of individual shots — which is what makes it feel much longer and more chaotic than its actual run time.

The original Halloween is part of the U.S. National Film Registry. The Library of Congress selected it in 2006 for preservation, a film considered culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant. Ghostbusters received the same recognition — the 1984 supernatural comedy was added to the National Film Registry in 2015. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre joined the registry decades after release; the 1974 film was selected in 2024.

Beetlejuice has an Oscar: Ve Neill, Steve La Porte, and Robert Short won the Academy Award for Makeup. I skipped questions where more than one answer could reasonably be called correct and leaned on the AFI Catalog, the Academy Awards database, and the Library of Congress National Film Registry for film-history claims that tend to get copied wrong from one trivia site to another.

A few ways I run this so it doesn’t turn into a film studies seminar.

For families: use the easy and family-friendly sections — Hocus Pocus, Halloweentown, Casper, Hotel Transylvania, Coraline, ParaNorman, Monster House, and The Nightmare Before Christmas. If young kids are playing, skip the horror rounds and they’ll still have plenty to latch onto.
