What to Wear Now: 5 Summer-to-Fall Outfits That Work for Both Seasons

Summer-to-fall style board with denim, tops, jackets, and sandals

There’s a week, every year, when the weather won’t commit. Mornings still need a tank, afternoons suddenly want a jacket, and the outfits you bought for summer suddenly look too light for what’s coming. That’s the moment I plan for.

I used to buy separate wardrobes for each season and wonder why my closet felt full and my options felt short. Then I started dressing for the overlap instead — pieces that are right now, and right later, once the air turns. Here’s the checklist I actually follow.

Start with the right denim

Denim is the whole bridge. This year I’m drawn to slightly darker washes and washed blacks — the kind that look right on a 25-degree day and still work when the evenings go cold.

I’ve also noticed twist-seam jeans everywhere lately, and they’re genuinely flattering. My favorite is the Mother Bookie, which is available in petite sizes — worth a try if you’re 5’4″ and under. There’s a new Pistola pair worth looking at too. If you can’t wear a pair of jeans three ways, that’s your sign to keep searching.

Add one top that goes with everything

Right now there are plenty of fun new tops, and the honest truth is they all work with the jeans you already own. One new top, paired with three different bottoms, is the cheapest way to make your whole closet feel current. I’d rather add one top that earns its place than five that don’t.

Shoes and bags that last past the season

For the transition, I reach for white sneakers like the Gola pair, tan sandals, and a structured tote. The rule I apply: if the shoes only make sense in one weather, they’re not a workhorse. Sneakers and a good tote carry you from the last beach week straight into September.

A lightweight jacket is the whole game

One structured, lightweight jacket — a cropped trench or a hooded layer — is the single best addition you can make at this point in the year. It’s the piece that turns a summer outfit into a fall one without you having to change at all. I own mine in two colors, and I’ve worn it into at least three seasons now. If you can’t wear it three ways, don’t buy it. But a good one you will.

One easy dress, worn two ways

A simple, easy dress is the other half of the bridge. Wear it now with sandals, and later with a cardigan and boots. A striped or solid midi in a soft fabric does the most for the least effort. This is the outfit I reach for when I want to look put-together without thinking about it.

Here’s the formula, in one line: dark-wash jeans + one new top + a lightweight jacket + an easy dress = a whole season of outfits. Try the swap this week: pick the one item on this list you’re missing and build one outfit around it. You’ll be surprised how much a single right piece does.

Wear it well — Elise
